HACIENDA LA PUENTE UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT TO PROVIDE FREE MEALS IN THE NEW SCHOOL YEAR

City of Industry, Calif. – On August 7th, Hacienda La Puente Unified School District (HLPUSD) will kick off the school year by offering students an exciting new program: free breakfast and lunch every day.

Under a new grant from the National School Lunch / School Breakfast programs, all students at 27 sites throughout the District will be eligible to receive healthy and nutritious meals at no charge.

“We’re thrilled to receive this award,” says District Superintendent Cynthia Parulan-Colfer. “No student should have trouble focusing in class because he/she is hungry. Most children can consume half of their daily calories in school, so it’s vital that they receive the proper nutrition.”

This new policy expands on last year’s program, eliminating the cost entirely for those who were previously eligible for reduced-price lunch. Many low-income students on the brink of qualifying for free lunch were unable to receive the help they needed, and the reduced-price was a financial burden for families. Now, more students can avoid the sickening feeling of an empty stomach and thrive in their coursework.

“This expansion truly benefits everyone,” says Linda Scaletta, Director of Food Services at the District. “It doesn’t cost the district any money, and we can provide more students with the healthy food they need to get through the day.”

The new school menus adhere to Department of Agriculture nutritional requirements, ensuring that meals are the highest quality. Breakfasts include daily servings of milk, fruit, and grains, while lunches add meat and meat alternatives, fruits and vegetables, and grains.
